Founded in 1978, the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that provides 40,000 meals, 47 permanent supportive housing apartments, and a wide array of health, education, and other supportive services to more than 2000 homeless and very low-income women each year. The mission of DWC is to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women. In pursuit of this mission, the organization provides resources homeless women need to reconnect with their sense of self and meet personal goals lost in the day-to-day struggle for survival on the streets. Twenty-nine years after its founding, DWC remains the only local resource on Skid Row that is singularly dedicated to addressing the unique needs of homeless women, and its Signature Programs include:

  • Day Center – three daily meals and supportive services available to homeless women on a drop-in basis

  • The Residence – affordable, permanent, supportive housing for chronically homeless, elderly, mentally ill, and/or physically disabled women

  • Health Outreach Initiative – health education, prevention and screening resources; a monthly on-site clinic; mental healthcare; geriatric services; and violence prevention, human trafficking, and outreach programs

  • Enrichment Programs – literacy and money management training; computer skills instruction; and art, drama, and poetry classes

  • Training Program – community training and professional networking services available to all homeless service providers on Skid Row

DWC is in the process of developing a green building of 67,145 sf and will pursue LEED® Silver certification under the New Construction Program through the USGBC.  The building will be located at 434 South San Pedro St. Los Angeles, CA  90013 and will include a green roof; it will maintain 75% of existing walls, floors and roof and will plan to reduce energy consumption with efficient appliances and ventilation systems.
